April First Friday: The Story of Plastics

Have you ever wondered how plastic became a problem? Are there viable solutions to reducing plastic waste? Stop by our April First Friday event to explore these questions and learn more about the history and future of synthetic materials.

Guests will be introduced to some of the first synthetic materials ever produced and see how these plastics compare to their natural counterparts. We will also explore how and why plastic waste became a global concern, and the ways plastics continue to impact our environment.

The library will be showcasing early dye sample books on synthetic materials from its collections, alongside resources on plastic waste management. Stop by the display to take a closer look and learn how you can access the Othmer Library’s collections.

Also on view in the museum is the latest ExhibitLab display, Objects That Tell Stories: Recent Acquisitions, which includes plastic artifacts that contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the life cycle of synthetic materials.
