Founding Member Spotlight
MOM’s Organic Market
MOM’s Organic Market is a family-owned and operated organic grocery store with locations in the Philadelphia region and throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Their purpose is to protect and restore the environment, and for thirty-five years, they’ve been doing that through the products they offer, their recycling partnerships, and the way they run their business.
Why did you become a founding member?
MOM’s Organic Market became a founding member because of our belief in the mission and goals behind Circular Philadelphia’s main message: to create a circular economy.
What does a circular economy mean to your organization?
To MOM’s Organic Market, a circular economy means reducing as much waste as we can, reusing whatever we can, and ultimately recycling everything else as a last resort. We live by these values internally and also work to educate our customers to adopt the same practices.
How is your organization practicing circularity?
MOM’s Organic Market partners with multiple organizations to take commonly used material, and to provide our community with a way to recycle them. For example, when natural cork is recycled at our location, the cork is shipped to our recycling partner, Cork Forest Conservation Alliance where it is grinded and used to make new sustainable items such as cork bobbers for fishing, consumer and industrial products, and recycled shipping materials. In addition, we reduce food waste by contributing to local food banks, participating in upcycling, and lastly composting. In addition to the many internal practices that promote a circular economy, we advocate in the communities in which we live and work.
How can others advance the circular economy?
Do anything! Start today with one small thing – begin to compost if you don’t already. Take your recycling to drop off at a MOM’s location. Volunteer to advocate for regulations and legislation that promotes a circular economy where you live. Educate yourself on what it means to have a circular economy and begin to walk the talk.
