Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia’s mission is to transform lives by building and repairing homes in partnership with local families and uniting all Philadelphians around the cause of affordable homeownership. ReStore is Habitat’s home store and donation center, offering unique, secondhand furniture and brand-new home essentials at a fraction of the retail price. Every dollar spent, item donated and hour volunteered at the ReStores supports Habitat Philadelphia’s programs.

Why did you become a Circular Philadelphia member?

The Habitat Philadelphia ReStores joined Circular Philadelphia because our work reaches far beyond building homes. We believe that preserving generational assets, supporting smarter policies and intentionally investing in the local economy are all keys to building and sustaining thriving communities.

What does a circular economy mean to your organization?

The ReStores accept donations of new and gently-used furniture, appliances, building materials and more from Philadelphia residents, as well as overstock inventory from local businesses. Many Philadelphians want to give their old furniture a new purpose — ReStore’s free donation pickup service offers that safe and affordable option.

Each item is then resold at budget-friendly prices, diverting dozens of tons of quality materials from the landfill and reinvesting those profits into Habitat’s homeownership and critical repair work.

How is your organization practicing circularity?

Since Habitat Philadelphia got its start 40 years ago, we’ve aimed to remove barriers to individual and communal security as we work alongside our homeowners and community partners. The circular economy is an invitation to prioritize these partnerships and seek out new opportunities for collaboration. In identifying opportunities for creative problem-solving, we encourage sustainable solutions like our critical home repair program, which recognizes that the most affordable home is the one you already live in.

How can others advance the circular economy?

There are a number of ways to get involved with the Philadelphia ReStores and contribute to the circular economy.

DONATE: Our team picks up donations from Philly residents and businesses for free and delivers them back to the ReStores daily.

VOLUNTEER: Our volunteers help assemble incoming furniture, organize the stores and offer essential support to shoppers and staff.
