Villanova University is a dynamic learning community founded in 1842 by the Order of St. Augustine. By utilizing the Augustinian values of Unitas, Veritas, and Caritas, meaning love thy neighbor, promote community unity, and live life in moderation through our curriculum, work environment, and operations, Villanova’s approach to sustainability exemplifies an emphasis on social justice and community service.

Why did you become a member?

Villanova University has joined Circular Philadelphia to network, collaborate, and exchange knowledge with diverse stakeholders in advancing circular economy practices in the Greater Philadelphia Area. We’re hoping to participate in impactful partnerships, shared learning opportunities, and help influence regional sustainability initiatives. Participating and engaging in these opportunities can contribute to shaping a more sustainable and circular economy in Philadelphia and beyond.

What does a circular economy mean to your organization?

Villanova University cares about the circular economy because of its alignment with our sustainability goals, potential for innovative research and education, community engagement opportunities, support for entrepreneurship, and demonstration of ethical and social responsibility through waste reduction, resource conservation, and contribution to a more sustainable economy. As an Augustinian Catholic University, Villanovans believe that there should be enough for all, always. Improving circular and sharing economies would help ensure that is achieved.

How is your organization practicing circularity?

Villanova University practices circularity in various ways across its operations and academic programs. This includes initiatives such as waste reduction, waste diversion, sustainable procurement, energy efficiency, and promoting sustainable transportation options. Through integration of circular economy principles into curriculum and research, we aim to foster a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainability awareness on campus and beyond. Villanova University’s current sustainability plan aligns directly with the UN’s SDG goals, as well as Pope Francis’ Laudato Si encyclical, calling all Villanovans to follow an Ethos of Sustainability both on campus and in their own personal lives.

How can others advance the circular economy?

Others can advance the circular economy by adopting sustainable consumption habits, reducing waste, and reusing, repairing, or recycling materials when they reach their end of life. Supporting other organizations that promote circularity, and purchasing items sourced from post-consumer materials can also help advance a circular economy. Also, getting involved in circular economy advocacy is another way to help.
