The circular economy in Philadelphia

What is the circular economy?

Imagine an economic system that we could implement right now that would save our planet.

That is the promise of the circular economy. Instead of the make, take and trash system that defined the industrialism of the 20th century, a circular economy reuses materials as long as possible, shares resources, designs out waste, and regenerates natural systems. It reimagines the old system as a continuous loop that transforms how we design, make and use everything.

How the Circular Economy system works

What is the opportunity?

A prosperous economy of the future is a circular economy.

We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity right now to bring together experts, investment, and cutting-edge research to generate the policy and market conditions necessary for the circular economy to thrive.

Why Circular Philadelphia?

We believe that the Philadelphia region’s enterprises and institutions should make the most of their money, materials, and potential.

Many Philadelphia enterprises are already using circular principles, but they are using them in an outdated industrial system that can only exist by consuming new materials and generating waste in a linear take-make-waste model. Circular Philadelphia works with these enterprises to transform the system into a circular one so they can compete and thrive regionally, nationally and globally.

Philadelphia’s recycling system is broken.

You can recycle anything if you have a process, the right infrastructure and a market.  Philadelphia’s system has none of these.  Building a circular economy is the solution.
